Teacher education in the
state of Maharashtra caters to the need for teachers from the pre-primary level
to the higher secondary level. The state has taken great strides in the field
of teacher education with colleges and universities conducting a variety of
teacher education programmes. All these programmes are run as per the norms and
standards laid down by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the apex
body in the field of teacher education.
The Director of Education
(Higher Education), Maharashtra State, Pune is the sole authority to look after
admissions to the B.Ed. programmes. Admissions for the B.Ed. programme in the
state of Maharashtra are centralized. There is a Common Entrance Test (CET).
In this centralized B.Ed
admission procedure, 70% of the seats are reserved for graduates of home
University, 28% for graduates of University in Maharashtra excluding home
University and 2% for graduates of University, outside the state of
Maharashtra.
Till the academic year
2014-15, B.Ed. was a one-year programme and the college had an intake capacity
of 100 students for B.Ed. Since then, the NCTE has revised the duration of B.Ed. and M.Ed. Programme to two years
and introduced a credit-based semester and grading system. Individual
syllabi are framed and prescribed by the affiliating Universities based on the
revised curriculum guidelines provided by NCTE. In the B.Ed. Programme, new
courses like Reading and reflecting on Texts, Drama and Art in Education,
Understanding the Self, Childhood & Growing Up have been introduced. The
faculty are challenged to gear up for transacting these new courses.
Examinations are conducted and certification is done by the affiliating
Universities.
Teacher
educators at the B.Ed level in the State require a Masters of Education degree.
They also need to clear the University Grants Commission National Eligibility
Test (UGC NET) or the State Eligibility Test (SET) for Lectureship which is
conducted by University
of Pune .
The academic and
administrative governance of teacher education programmes in Maharashtra is a
collective responsibility of various regulatory bodies.
